What Is Chimney Pointing?
Chimney pointing is repointing the mortar joints of a brick chimney. The worn mortar is raked out and replaced with fresh mortar, course by course, while the bricks stay in place. It’s the most common repair a chimney needs, and when it’s done in time, it’s often the only one.
Chimney joints wear out faster than any other joints on a house. A chimney stands clear of the roof with weather hitting every side, it heats and cools with every season, and on chimneys that vent heating equipment, moisture from the flue can attack the mortar from the inside. That’s why a house with sound brick walls can still have a chimney whose top few courses look like the mortar has simply disappeared.
Chimney Pointing in NYC Before Water Gets Inside
By the time a chimney leak shows up on a ceiling, water has usually been working through the joints for a while. We repoint chimneys before it gets that far, starting where the damage is worst and working down, and we don’t skip the joint at the roofline where so many chimney leaks begin.
Top Courses Repointed
The most exposed joints near the top of the chimney, where mortar washes out first, repointed and tooled.
Full Chimney Repointing
Every joint from the top to the roofline repointed when wear has spread down the chimney.
Flashing Joints
Roof flashing is tucked into a mortar joint on the chimney, and when that joint fails, water runs behind it. We repoint and reset it.
Chimney Joints That Need Repointing
You can check a chimney from the street or a window with a pair of binoculars. The mortar joints near the top will tell you the most.
If you see any of these, repointing now is usually far cheaper than waiting until the chimney needs rebuilding.
Joints Eaten Away at the Top
Deep, hollow joints in the upper courses of the chimney.
Flashing Pulling Loose
Metal flashing lifting out of its joint on the chimney.
Loose Top Bricks
Bricks near the top that shift because their mortar is gone.
Grit in the Fireplace
Sand and mortar crumbs falling down inside the chimney.
White Stains on Chimney Brick
Salt deposits left as water moves through the joints.
Stains Around the Chimney Inside
Damp patches on ceilings or walls beside the chimney.
Our Chimney Repointing Process in NYC
Chimney work happens on the roof, so protection comes before any mortar is touched.
01
Roof Setup & Protection
Safe access is set up, and the roof and gutters are covered before work begins.
02
Rake Joints Top to Bottom
Worn mortar is cut out from the top courses down, without damaging the brick edges.
03
Repoint With a Weather-Hardy Mix
Joints are packed with mortar suited to the chimney's exposure and matched to the brick.
04
Reset Flashing & Clean Up
Flashing joints are repointed, the chimney is tooled and cleaned, and the roof is cleared.
What Chimney Pointing Can and Can't Fix
Pointing solves a lot of chimney problems, but not all of them. Knowing the difference saves you money.
What Pointing Fixes
Open and crumbling joints, loose top bricks held by failing mortar, and leaks that start in the joints or the flashing joint.
What It Doesn't Fix
A leaning chimney, a cracked crown, or badly spalled brick needs rebuilding or repair beyond pointing. We'll tell you if that's what we find.
Chimneys Venting Heating Equipment
Moisture from the flue can wear mortar from the inside. Liner and venting problems belong to chimney specialists and licensed trades.
Chimney Mortar & Materials
A chimney is the harshest spot on the building for mortar, so the materials are chosen for it specifically.
Weather-Hardy Mortar
A mix durable enough for full exposure, while still compatible with the brick.
Color-Matched Joints
Mortar tinted so repointed courses blend with the rest of the chimney.
Flashing Reglet's
The flashing joint repointed so the metal is held tight and sealed.
Breathable Finish
No film-forming coatings that trap moisture in the chimney.

Every worn joint repointed, not just the visible gaps.
Roof Left Clean
Your roof and gutters protected and cleared.
Flashing Joints Included

Chimney Pointing Reviews From NYC Homeowners
4.6 /5
“Our chimney had missing mortar and a few joints that were visibly cracking. They repointed the damaged areas and checked the rest of the masonry while they were up there. Everything was handled professionally.”

Chimney Pointing FAQs
Yes, as long as the bricks are still sound and the chimney is standing straight. Repointing replaces only the mortar. If the chimney is leaning or many bricks have broken apart, repointing won't be enough, and it will need to be rebuilt.
A chimney is exposed on every side, goes through constant heating and cooling, and catches the worst of the wind and rain above the roof. Chimneys that vent heating equipment can also be attacked from inside by moisture from the flue.
If the water is getting in through the joints or the flashing joint, yes. Leaks can also come from a cracked crown, a missing cap, or failed flashing metal, so we find the source before recommending the fix.
Film-forming sealers and paints can trap moisture and damage the brick. On very exposed chimneys, a breathable water repellent applied after repointing can help, but it's never a substitute for sound joints.
Mild weather is best, since fresh mortar needs time to cure without freezing or drying out too fast. Spring and fall are ideal in NYC, and late spring also lets you fix winter damage before the next heating season.
